MY PARENTS DON’T understand that I’m a grown man.

They say things like, “Come home right now,” and, “We’re going to get you back on the right path.”

I haven’t ever fought them on anything, though, that’s the thing. So, I let them yell at me on the phone, and it’s surprising how it doesn’t affect me in the way I thought it would. I guess it’s because I’ve known all along that I’m disappointing them, and there’s always been this rush of awful guilt for lying to them and letting them think that I’m the good son they thought they produced.

So, this part, it’s actually a relief. They know everything now. I don’t have to pretend anymore.

And then, with them huffing around and trying to order me to do things, it shows me that they don’t think very highly of me. They don’t think I can run my own life, because they’ve been laboring under the impression that they have been running my life.

But the truth is, I’ve done all this on my own. I’m more mature than they think, and I’ve actually created a life for myself from pretty much nothing.

Not nothing, really. I know that if you grow up with a certain amount of wealth, it means that you have a number of advantages and so I’m not saying that.

But it’s still an accomplishment. So, eventually, when they run out of steam and stop talking, and give me a chance to speak, I’m calm as I explain to them that I’m not coming home and I’m not going to be traveling the path they have plotted out for me, that I’ve created my own path.

“I have all the money you’ve been sending me in an account,” I say. “I’ll text you the account number and what you’ll need to access it. Alternately, I can close it myself and wire you the money.”

“You saved that money?” My father is stunned.

“I wasn’t going to take it,” I say. “That would have been dishonest.”

“But you’ve been lying to us,” says my mother, indignant. “That’s dishonest.”

“Well, I wouldn’t take money from you under false pretenses,” I say. “My band does okay for itself. I make up the rest of the money myself, doing whatever I can. This maybe isn’t the life you want for me, but it is a life. And I’ve done it myself. I’m going to continue living my life, and I’m sorry it doesn’t please you, but maybe after the shock wears off, you’ll be able to accept it.”

“I don’t think so,” says my father.

“Absolutely not,” says my mother. “A drummer! I feel so ashamed for bragging about you to the Lees. How they must have laughed to send us this link, showing us what you really are.”

Yeah, this was embarrassing for them. One of their friends outed me, and Mrs. Lee is probably crowing over this, enjoying my mother’s discomfort. She is one of those kind of people. So, I do feel like shit about that.

“Next,” says my mother, “you’ll say your girlfriend is some groupie or something.
